Production companies are split into two different companies: Major, and independant.
Major films on the other hand, don't have as much freedom, but they have access to a much larger budget most of the time. Warner Bros. Pictures, for instance, was founded in 1923, and has spanned over multiple genres, and so has grossed a mass following and has enough money to spend on its own money without sourcing from other places. Because of this, though, they have to be careful with their money, and so are much more restricted on new ideas for films (such as the horror genre)
